All parents want their children to experience success in learning. Students of all ages do better in school when they are reading, writing, and participating in literacy and other learning activities with their families. In recognition of the important role parents play in their children's school success as well as the achievement of high educational standards in the Commonwealth, November 2010 has been declared Family Literacy Month in Massachusetts.
In celebration of Family Literacy Month Massachusetts libraries are offering special programs and events to bring families together around the joy of sharing a good book. Events such as special pajama story times, poetry slams, music and reading performances, author visits and more will be taking place at libraries across the state. For a complete list of participating libraries please see: http://libraries.state.ma.us/pages/familit2010
Schools, adult literacy programs, parent support programs, social service agencies, businesses, and other community organizations have also organized fun family-centered activities including: read alouds with authors and community leaders; read-a-thons; bookmaking and storytelling projects; numeracy and problem solving activities; book giveaways; discounts on books and educational games; and trips to museums, historic sites, and natural landmarks.
This year, as part of a special celebration, the Boston Children’s Museum will hold a family-fun event on Friday, November 5 2010 from 6:00- 8:30 pm. Families are encouraged to attend and enjoy the museum’s terrific resources as well as participate in special storytelling, crafts, and art activities in honor of Family Literacy Month.
Family Literacy Month is sponsored by the Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium and its member agencies including the Department of Early Education and Care and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
