Description :
Morrill Memorial Library is running a monthly program series delving into the many aspects of media literacy and online engagement, with programs held on the second Tuesday of the month and focusing on a different topic. Our third event in the series is titled "Verifying Reputable Sources" and will be held on Tuesday, May 13 starting at 7:00pm in the Simoni Room. We live in a world of instant and endless adventure through our access to the internet! The digital landscape is changing quickly, and we have more access to information than ever before. With that, however, comes some potential pitfalls: There is plenty of misleading and even dangerous information out there, too. The Library's Be MediaWise series invites you to explore your engagement with online information and learn how to navigate the internet safely and confidently. Each session is designed as a standalone program, so while you are welcome to attend the whole series, you can also come just for the sessions that interest you! Tonight, join Adult Services Librarian Heath Umbreit to learn about verifying reputable sources. We'll explore what lateral reading is and why it can be helpful in verifying information; how to evaluate whether search results are reputable or not; and what the difference is between primary and secondary sources. Please note: Programs in this series follow the modules laid out in Be MediaWise: A Misinformation Resilience Toolkit, a resource developed by Poynter Institute and the American Library Association in 2023-24. Heath served as an advisory board member for this project. Registration is required for this in-person program; please register by filling out the form below, or calling the Reference Desk at 781-769-0200 x2. norwoodlibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/be-mediawise-verifying-reputable-sources/
