Description :

What do you know about the “Memory” statue? It is so familiar to those of us who drive by its location in the Town of Sherborn’s Central Burying Ground at the split of Routes 16 and 27. The statue memorializes the Sherborn residents who died in wars through World War I, was a gift of William Bradford Homer Dowse and was created by the sculptor Cyrus Dallin (1861-1944). The Town also received, as a gift from Dr. Scudder, a plaster copy of Dallin’s bust of Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Geri Tremblay and Nancy Blanton, who are respectively the President and Secretary/Staff Director of Outreach and Engagement of the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum in Arlington, Massachusetts, will give a presentation entitled “Dallin in our Memory and his Sherborn Sculptures.” They consider the “Memory” statue to be one of Dallin’s more significant works. Another copy of the bust of Dr. Holmes is on display at the museum. People will be able to see the bust at the program. If weather permits, we will gather afterwards at the “Memory” statue for a few more remembrances. This is a HYBRID program, join us in-person at the Library or remotely by Zoom. Please register to receive the Zoom link.  This event is cosponsored by the Sherborn History Center, the Sherborn Library and the Sherborn Council on Aging. The program will be recorded and available later online as a YouTube video. sherbornma.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/dallin-in-our-memory-and-his-sherborn-sculptures/
