Description :
The Town of West Newbury and the G.A.R. Memorial Library are proud to present a powerful event celebrating the voices and experiences of local veterans through an interactive exhibit and documentary film screening. Since its launch in 2024, the Veterans Oral History Project has preserved 14 oral histories from West Newbury veterans who served in conflicts ranging from the Korean War to Operation Desert Storm and Afghanistan/Iraq. These firsthand accounts are now part of the Libraryâs permanent archive, an invaluable record of courage, sacrifice, and lived history. Drawing from this remarkable collection, West Newbury resident and filmmaker Timothy Friend has created âStories of Service,â a short documentary film that weaves together excerpts from the veteransâ interviews with archival materials to present a moving tribute to those who served. The film, supported by West Newburyâs Public, Educational & Governmental (PEG) fund, will premiere during a special event on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 3:00 PM at the G.A.R. Memorial Library. The event will also mark the unveiling of the Veterans Oral History Project Storywalk, an outdoor exhibit on Library grounds. Visitors will be able to scan QR codes at each Storywalk station to view all 14 recorded interviews in full. The display also features a poignant selection of Civil War-era letters exchanged between Lieutenant Colonel Eben P. Stanwood of the 48th Massachusetts Regiment Infantry and his wife, Mary, offering historical context and a striking parallel to the more recent stories of service. This event is free and open to the public. We encourage all to celebrate our veterans, and explore the stories that connect generations. westnewburylibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/storywalk-exhibit-and-premiere-of-stories-of-service-documentary/
