This is a Virtual Program. Celebrate Graphic Novel Month by joining Drawn & Quarterly editor Tom Devlin for a virtual conversation! A brief overview of comics in the 20th and 21st Centuries focusing on the long-form graphic novel and how children's entertainment became an experimental storytelling art form for adults. Classics of the form like Krazy Kat, Wash Tubbs, Little Lulu will be discussed as we move into the more modern innovations of artists like Lynda Barry, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, Chester Brown, Daniel Clowes, and Julie Doucet. We'll finish by focusing on the modern graphic novel and how the formal elements of comics storytelling works.
