Join researchers from Northeastern University, San Diego State University and University of California, San Diego in a conversation about local public health policies and enforcement and the impact on the health and safety of individuals with substance use disorders. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. West Coast participants will be joining via Zoom. This presentation is free, but registration is requested. About the presenters: Falmouth resident Leo Beletsky JD, MPH, is a Professor of Law and Health Sciences at Northeastern University. He is an interdisciplinary social epidemiologist who explores the role of law and law enforcement as structural determinants of health. His intervention design and implementation science research focuses on using policy interventions to improve population health and equity, with special focus on the overdose crisis. Lianne A. Urada, Ph.D., MSW, LCSW is an Associate Professor of Social Work at San Diego State University, core faculty for the SDSU-UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Research on Substance Use, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Global Public Health at UC San Diego’s Department of Medicine. Her research focuses on developing and testing interventions for vulnerable and underserved populations in the US experiencing homelessness, human trafficking, and opioid use addiction. Ashley Weitensteiner is a Ph.D. student in the joint Interdisciplinary Research on Substance Use program between the University of California, San Diego, and San Diego State University. Her research interests include examining substance use outcomes among people who have been sexually exploited and disparities related to substance use, such as overdose and overdose response behaviors, particularly among individuals experiencing homelessness. More broadly, Ashley focuses on studying the inequalities faced by marginalized populations in accessing the benefits of harm reduction drug policies.
