Description :

How does the waste system actually work, and what we can do to achieve a more circular economy? The solid waste system is notoriously opaque, even to those working in it. Where do those materials actually go? Is recycling "broken"? Are waste companies and governments making decisions that are actually benefiting our communities and the planet? How does waste intersect with other environmental challenges like climate change? Join Professor Jonathan Krones to learn some behind-the-scenes details about how our waste system operates and visions for a more-circular and sustainable economy. Come with all of your questions about garbage, recycling, composting, disposal, hauling, waste-to-energy, repair, and anything else! Jonathan Krones is Associate Professor of Engineering at Brandeis University. His research in the field of industrial ecology focuses on environmentally sustainable materials and solid waste systems at multiple scales. He served on the Boston Zero Waste Advisory Council and has helped to organize over a hundred community repair workshops in Eastern Massachusetts since 2017 to help people fix their broken things, keeping valuable materials out of the waste stream. He received his PhD in Engineering Systems from MIT in 2016. belmontpubliclibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/garbage-101-with-jonathan-krones/
